The drawings below were done in the 1970s as plans for the Projections Series, relief wall installations I built and painted. This way of planning them was inspired by an exhibit of architectural drawings of the Ecole de Beaux Arts. I enjoyed using their drawing and mapping conventions and making up some of my own.
Many of these works have a multicolored icon on them near the bottom; It is a logic diagram I made to show the relationship of the colors to each other on that structure.
The construction to the left here had unprimed canvas pleats in the wood channels and not much color on the front. In the projection series drawings, which followed, (pictured below ) I worked with the same concept, but planned for the wooden backing and skeletal support to be the front of the work, By doing this I was able to get more color impact, while maintaining the structure and three dimensionality of the work. These resulted in my Projection Series exhibition of painted relief structures at the Soho Center for the Visual Arts in 1979.
