City Blocks. 2015 contact
City Blocks , done in early 2015 ,were my first freestanding sculptures.
They are three-dimensional sketches, tactile expressions and explorations of crowding , spacing, growth, expansion and connection in urban areas. The idea came as I was arranging painted horizontal rows of painted wood scraps in a shoebox. I turned one vertically and saw a city tower. They are small, 2x2x3" up t o 8 x10x8"
There is a synergy between these small structures and my paintings and installations.
A major focus with these works was how to present them; eye level, on the floor, table top?
together or separate? with other work? The introduction of translucent materials was inspired by the glazes and transparencies in my paintings and refers to the glass curtain facades of urban architecture.
